Clean in ’16

This January, I’ve been evaluating the status of my house.

It’s not pretty.

Dust blobs on the ceiling fans. Grime on the baseboards. And I don’t even want to talk about the state of my linen closets.

So, in an effort to more systematically tackle my house, I signed up for an email housecleaning reminder list. I just wanted someone to tell me what to do. I’m not afraid of hard work, but I am a terrible noticer. I don’t notice stuff until it is REALLY bad. Then I start noticing things and have to spend 2 weeks cleaning the grime.

I know that it wouldn’t be so bad if I cleaned it a little at a time. But remembering…

I do okay with the sanitary cleaning, but dust and cobwebs behind the fridge, dust balls under the couch, and disorganization in my cupboards really escapes my notice.

That popular online cleaning lady sends you daily cleaning messages lasted all of 2 days. I was swamped with email. Many of them were “inspirational” ones that just irritated me (Just tell me what to do. The end.) and others were salesy promotions. Nope. Not interested in buying your silver polish. I don’t even have real silver.

The more I thought about it, I figured that I just needed to make a master list of tasks my house needs and break it down incrementally. Weekly tasks, monthly tasks, quarterly tasks, and a daily routine would definitely be an improvement over what I’m doing now. Even if I don’t get to everything every single week or every single month, I do think it’ll be better than nothing.

So that’s what I’ve come up with. I now have a master list and I’m beginning to hit my household chores a little at a time. My hope is that if I do these chores more regularly, they won’t be as time consuming to tackle because the dirt won’t have built up to such a disgusting level.

Here’s my master list. I’m hoping to post every week or twice a week about what I hope to accomplish in that day. Each week, I’ll try to complete my weekly rotations and a few off the monthly and quarterly list. I’m making a note of the date when  I tackle that chore so I don’t repeat it until I need to redo it.

Weekly Chores

  • Bonus Room—vacuum, dust, clean couches, baseboards, stairs
  • Living Room—vacuum, dust, clean couches, wipe baseboards
  • Kitchen—mop, wipe baseboards, Windex appliances, clean microwave, clean fridge

  • Declutter and sanitize kitchen counters and sink

Monthly Chores

 Quarterly Cleaning

I’m also approaching it as I do homeschooling. I’m sure there’s things I’ve forgotten and things that need to be changed. But, it’s going to be a work in progress. I’ll change and adapt it as needed.

So, what about you? How do you tackle your cleaning routine? Do you want to join me to get your house Clean in 2016? Follow along with me and maybe we can keep ourselves motivated.
